Many road and trails need ADA-compliant improvements. It is not possible to complete all of the updates at once, so we must prioritize the projects and complete them as funding allows.

We use an accessibility compliance scoring system, ranging from 0 (critical improvements needed) to 100 (no improvements needed). Areas are given priority in the order of:

  • Transit-oriented and institutional facilities
  • Arterials and collectors (roads that are heavily traveled)
  • Commercial and industrial employers
  • All other areas

Within those areas, priority is given to areas based on conditions, from 0 (worst condition) to 100 (best condition):

  • Physical condition fails to meet all standards
  • No curb ramp at pedestrian access points
  • No detectable warning surface present
  • Does not meet minimum clearance width
  • Existing ramps are not functional and the geometry (shape and slope) of the ramp does not meet requirements
  • Existing ramps are functional, but the geometry (shape and slope) of the ramp does not meet requirements
  • Meets standards (no changes needed)

The prioritization score will be used to determine which projects are funded, unless the funding is restricted to a specific project or area.

This means that ADA-compliance improvements are made in lower priority areas because funding has been given to a different project in the area, such as a paving project or road construction.
